The Bolsheviks destroyed one set of socioeconomic classes and set up another–their own. Allende was a class warrior too, and there he is, puffing it up with the New Order, the humble purveyors of societal virtue.

When his time came, he wasn’t at the windows of La Moneda, valiantly fighting for his cause. He was at his desk, writing the next speech he wanted to give.

His presidential predecessor, fellow Socialist Eduardo Frei Montalva, called Allende’s time in office, a ‘carnival of madness’. It indeed was that, right down to the end.
