Present-day Iran’s “theocracy” has nothing to do with any sort of spiritual faith. Ruhollah Khomeini was vitally interested in spiritual “internalism” for himself, but wouldn’t let it be taught to Iran’s common people. To do so would violate the idea of vilayet-i-faquih, castrating his desire for personal power at its ideological scrotum.

Likewise, Twelver Shiism will adamantly have nothing whatsoever to do with Sunni Islam’s Caliph Umar, but today’s Iran has been headed down precisely the same secularist, empire-building (and Quran-rewriting) track as Umar and Uthman took the Prophet’s faith.

“The Donald” hasn’t the slightest understanding of the grip which the IRGC and the Basij have on the country. (Down in their graves, the French Jacobins and the Bolsheviks are drooling in admiration.)
