(After much thought) for myself, it isn’t … where I was and how I saw it.
That day became – over time – the beginning a two-decade-long, intensive research into the origins of present-day Jihadist Islamism (ism), and more important, into certain historical “elements” which/who re-shaped the very-earliest, original Islam into something it wasn’t.
The original still exists, openly in some geographies, in unobtrusive corners in others.
The research had little to do with theology, and everything to do with attempted discernment of historical persons, events, patterns and trends, and the likelihood of capabilities and motives.
I would love to sit beside John Wansbrough’s and Mahmoud Mohammed Taha’s graves and have lengthy discussions with them.
(If I tried to find Taha’s, I’d be slaughtered in the most religious, properly-violent fashion.)
